Art of the Title

Meghan Colvin has recently touched on this subject with her post on the opening credits for Juno, but I recently came across a website via my Very Short List that devotes itself entirely to these short masterpieces. A proper introduction needs to capture the essence of the film or show, but some of really outdo themselves— I loved Thank You For Smoking, but I think the title sequence was actually my favorite part. Created by designer Ian Albinson and writer Alexander Ulloa, Art of the Title is a treasure trove of such pieces. I could browse for hours.

And just for kicks (and because I know two of my fellow bloggers share this obsession), can you imagine how LOST would have been different if they opted for a traditional opening in lieu of their floating typography? The folks over at Weebl's Stuff can— and I think the result is hilarious! ••••

Dexter's title sequence is quite enjoyable and one of the best I've seen. The show even won an Emmy in 2007 for their title sequence. I also like the title sequence for Mad Men, which, unfortunately, isn't on Art of the Title. Yet.

Thank You for Smoking’s was particularly great. It certainly beats the million other title sequences that have a cheesy photo montage of scenes of New York with kitschy music.
I must say, I am thankful that most TV programs have stopped doing sequences before the show begins. It’s a waste of valuable show time. However in lieu of this, the credits are played up to 15 minutes into the show.

I like the opening sequence for Six Feet Under and The Sopranos because I like Muffler Men: http://sarahheartsdesign.blogspot.com/2008/05/roadside-america-and-muffler-men.html
