Take me out to the ball game

Despite mourning from the sting of my favorite baseball team, the Red Sox, not making it to the World Series, I thought this article about the designer of the MLB logo was very interesting. (Via the Wall Street Journal online).

A few highlights:
-The Logo was designed by Jerry Dior in 1968
-The logo was to serve two purposes: 1) to signify that MLB was placing league-wide merchandizing rights under a new umbrella company and 2) and to commemorate the national pastime's upcoming centennial.
-the cost for the logo was between $10,000 and $25,000
- Industry tracker "Licensing Letter" estimates revenue of MLB-licensed goods (which all display the MLB logo) to be $3.3 billion in 2007.

"[The logo] is like the Coca-Cola mark. It's highly recognizable," says Mr. Villante, who later served as baseball's executive director of marketing and broadcasting. "It's the symbol of professional baseball."

Great post! I wanted to post about the final four teams' logos. Didn't get to it but I'll say here: I like the MLB logo. I think out of the four teams that were left standing this season here are my faves: the Dodgers, classic, and the Phillies, fun. I can't STAND the Sox but in the battle over which logo is better, the Sox beat the Rays on that. Definitely classic and unique. For the Rays, what's up with the star on their logo?!?! I guess we'll see more and can ponder that over the next week...
