P.S I Made This

I'm not sure how I came across this site, but I know I love it. P.S. I Made This is one woman's venture to deconstruct today's trends into affordable DIY projects. I have no clue how she comes up with a lot of her solutions, but they all appear affordable and pretty fabulous. I won't lie, some are a bit over the top, but still appreciated! Enjoy. ••••

Hester Prynn, Trendsetter?

Some of our more loyal readers may remember a post by Sarah back in our early days on this questionable Victor and Rolf design. It begs the question: what do you typophiles think about wearable your letterforms? Examples have been popping up left and right on the web, and I've pulled just a few of my favorites. Above, family tree necklace by Sarah Van Gameren, dictionary drop earrings from Foundling, and a vintage typewriter ring on Etsy.

Upper and lowercase scarves from Little Factory.

Letter tote bags from Bang, an Etsy necklace find, type tshirt from Veer, and an adorable, inexpensive J ring also from Etsy.

Laverne pulled the look off, so why shouldn't we? In fact, Miu Miu used Laverne's trademark initial L as inspiration for their fall show. ••••

Not Your Average Road Kill

When you think of road kill you generally think of bloody mashed animal carcasses, correct? (Nice image, I know.) Well, let me introduce you to some more, shall we say, desirable road kill: The Recycled Dead. The Recycled Dead is a collection of jewelry from the fantastically artsy pair Christopher and Whitney. Combining "their love for fine art, taxidermy, and couture fashion" the pair have created a truly inspired collection using objects such as teeth, bones, claws and feathers. Despite the seemingly dark and edgy content, the jewelry is extremely delicate and lovely. Also, the photography used to showcase their work is beautiful in its own right. ••••

GAP Whitney Biennial T-Shirts

My old employer the GAP has released a limited edition line of t-shirts designed by Whitney Biennial participants. The artists include such icons as Jeff Koons, Chuck Close, Kiki Smith (designs shown below), Marilyn Minter, Cai Guo-Quiang, Barbara Kruger, and others. T-shirts are all $28+ and they are selling out WAY too quickly. While I thought it would be difficult to pull off wearing something as iconic as Close's image of Philip Glass, I did consider purchasing the Kiki Smith top but acted too slowly. To browse the collection, visit the GAP website here. Happy shopping! ••••

Mary Katrantzou

I'm really liking this bold dress collection by Mary Katrantzou. It features dresses with trompe l'oiel digital prints of over sized neckpieces. The symmetrical designs hark back to art deco, while keeping it contemporary with color choices (which are spot on. fluorescent yellow...so hot right now). This collection is something truly amazing and original, it is fresh and I hope to see more designs like this in different mediums (how great would these be on just tee shirts?) Check out her website for more, the girl is going places!

Pantone Eyewear

Ok, I admit to being a design nerd, but I don't know if I have the guts to wear these...Pantone Eyewear. You can pick from multiple pantone color options and change your frame color day-to-day depending on your mood. Today I think I would pick 'nomad'.

Nike's "Green" Shoe

In the spirit of shoe design (Meghan) and environmental design (my new "green" job), I wanted to share this new shoe Nike created (with Steve Nash, a basketball player for the Phoenix Suns) called the "Nike Trash Talk." The basketball shoe is made from the manufactured waste from the Nike factory. Until I saw this shoe I didn't stop to consider about how much waste shoe factories must produce a year. The Trash Talk retails at $100. Interesting idea, but not going on my shopping list. (unless I decide to become an NBA basketball player).

My Favorite Laptop Bag

Part of being a graphic designer involves a great deal of schlepping your laptop around. Well, the only way to do this, of course, is in style. So let me share with you MY favorite laptop case. It is the Trixy bag from Acme Made, a company that specializes in functional, yet stylish computer cases. It is large enough to hold my laptop, all the cords and gadgets that come with it, as well as other materials such as papers, notebooks, and sketchbooks. It also comes with a separate laptop sleeve and matching accessories bag. It's a great find and I recommend it to everyone.

Artist #72

I am lucky enough to be a part of an incredible project called the 1HUND(RED) artists initiative and wanted to share it with you all! Collaborating with (PRODUCT)RED, the initiative brings together 100 artists from around the world to celebrate the artistic spirit and help fight AIDS in Africa. Go to converse.com to learn more and to pick up some shoes for a great cause! It is humbling to be placed next to some INCREDIBLE artists (Dondi White, Camilla Engman, and Tim Liles). There are 96 more to come...so watch out for them! II got my pair today.

Jovovich-Hawk for Target

I feel compelled to write a personal opinion post on the new GO International Jovovich-Hawk line for Target. I should preface this post with my general thoughts on the GO International line. When Target first began showcaseing rising fashion designers in February of 2006, I was intrigued. I admit, I had never shopped for clothes at Target but begin browsing these lines once they were introduced. It wasn't until Proenza Schouler last Spring, that I actually bought something and still wear it to this day. My feelings are mixed each month, depending on which designer is showcased. I was not feeling Erin Fetherston or Libertine, but enjoyed Alice Temperley and now Jovovich-Hawk.

Milla Jovovich and Carmen Hawk describe their line as "Art Nouveau...but how they used it in the 70s, fun, flirty, and ironic." I was impressed with the collection they designed because for once I think the pieces look a bit 'more expensive' and wearable. I would even consider wearing some of the clothes to the office. Ok, some of the dresses are a little too hippie dippy and look like they should be paired with a hemp necklace and Birkenstocks, but most of the tops and skirts are very cute. My only concern is every time I wear one of these items, I will see ten girls on the street with the same top (alla H&M clothes) but for $24 a top I'll risk it.

David Rathman makes me care about sports paintings.

Rathman recently did some billboard artwork for an Undefeated/Dunk collab which prompted me to do some research. His charming watercolors are very considered in color and composition. The way he pays tribute to the Dunk is, in typical Nike fashion, classic. Known for his oil depictions of the Old West, his new work is more sports-centric. With an upcoming show at Clementine Gallery, NYC, I hope to see his work in person. Check out some of his other work through Clementine.

Trend Then, Trend Now

Since I work in the wonderful world of e-commerce, I get to (guilt-free) spend time on other retailers websites - naturally it's purely professional and for the betterment of our site (right). Well during some of our daily comp shopping my co-worker, Alexandra, stumbled upon this awesome section on the Saks Fifth Avenue site: Decades of Style. They have merchandised modern clothes, shoes, and accessories to correspond to the decade in which they were inspired by. Just goes to show that great fashion never goes out of style.

Wishful Thinking

Amazing new ad campaign and spring line for Dolce & Gabbana. I guess I just need to hurry up and become rich to purchase one of these.

If you're in Reykjavík anytime soon...

Pick me up one of these. Some terrific Icelandic textiles from Vík Prjónsdóttir.

Colored Tights. No? Yes.

I have been quite skeptical of this trend in the past, and you may be too, but hear me out. Distress all the denim and collared shirts you want, Abercrombie & Fitch, but being BOLD is here to stay. You can't beat the brilliant colors seen in Zac Posen and Proenza Schouler's Fall 2008 lines! Why not stock up for next fall or finish this winter in style? If you haven't heard of Sri Lankan musician M.I.A by now, then you've been living under a rock and need to come out from under it to call your friends to tell them you're okay. While you're out here, appreciate her boldness and ability to rock any tight that is thrown her way. She is a fashion icon and my most recent guilty pleasure.

Ready to be bold? We Love Colors can help you there. Offering 45 terrific hues along with fresh patterns like zig-zag and tie-dye, the colors just bring a smile to my face. "Hey, I want an Olive Green pair." Yeah, they've got that! I have a pair of neon yellow, purple and grey...they are delightful.
